It was reported that more than 100 Chinese consumers have filed an official complaint against Hewlett-Packard Co over faulty laptop computers, leaving the door open for a lawsuit against the U.S. technology company.

Jiang Suhua, a lawyer at Yingke Law Firm in Beijing, stated that the complaint boils down to the video cards that were overheated and caused the laptop to malfunction. He said that around 170 Chinese sent the complaint on Friday to the country’s quality control watchdog agency, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine.

Jiang said the problems dated back as far as 2007 in some cases. When contacted, HP said in a statement it had a program in November 2007 to offer a free repair for customers with affected HP notebooks. It declined to comment directly on the complaint.

Jiang said the group wanted the government to investigate and order HP to recall all defective laptops in China. “Yes, we can bring it to court, but right now it has not reached that stage,” he uttered.

HP generates more than three-fifths of its revenue outside its U.S. home base. Last month, it said sales from fast-growing emerging countries Brazil, Russia, India and China leapt 41 percent from a year ago.

We had a great expectation of netbooks last year, but only 100 Yuan (A$16.50) profit margin was made. The success of iPhonish product is a matter of life or death for us.”

HP has divulged a number of new computers that includes the first small form factor (SFF) workstation that will be offered all around the world. The new SFF unit is dubbed as the HP Z200 SFF. This unit has a very compact footprint without sacrificing the performance as well as the features.

This HP Z200 SFF can have up to 16GB of ECC memory and up to 2TB of storage. This unit has dual-core CPU options including new Core i3 and i5 processors and quad-core Xeon 3400 series processors are available as well. Acer has revealed a new line of notebooks – the Acer Aspire Ethos series – that promises slick design alongside with multimedia performance.

Two models have been presented to the public - t he Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G and Aspire Ethos 5943G – with a preference of Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, 18-inch 1920 x 1080 and 15.6-inch 1366 x 768 displays respectively, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD5000 graphics.

There is also Dolby Home Theater surround support, with 5.1 output and in fact the Ethos 5943G manages to fit in a full five speakers on its own.  The storage capacity is up to 1.28TB (combining two 640GB HDDs) and there is an option of DVD or Blu-ray optical drives.

The connectivity includes WiFi, gigabit Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.1, together with eSATA, USB, FireWire, HDMI and VGA and there is a fingerprint reader and webcam too.  No word on prices or availability from the Italian launch as of yet, but these will be premium units.

HP has divulged a new Elitebook 8740 notebook workstation, which can run up to five screens from a single graphics card.

The HP EliteBook 8740w runs either an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor and supports up to 16GB of DDR3 SDRAM and supports USB 3.0 connectivity. The storage options would be up to 500GB at 7200rpm or a HP 3D DriveGuard 256GB soid-state drive. The powerful laptop has a SATA optical drive with Blu-ray recording support (although it does not play Blu-ray movies).

The HP EliteBook 8740w comes with HP DreamColor display technology. HP claims that the notebook will produce accurate and consistent color. It also has a backlit keyboard. The unit comes with graphics options from ATI or NVIDIA with up to 1GB video memory. Graphics options include a 1GB ATI FirePro M7820 GDDR5 and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800M or FX 2800M, both the 1GB of GDDR3 graphics memory.

To run multiple monitors you will need an optional dock supplied separately. This, however, enables you to add three external HDMI displays to the monitor, plus an optional VGA display (and use the display on the EliteBook itself).

With the price tag of €3,579 or $4,752.42, HP EliteBook 8740w is expected to be available worldwide starting in April.

The global manufacturer, Belkin, has unveiled a new range of wireless routers, which are designed to be user friendlier and enable people to do more other than just to connect devices.

There are four new routers for this new range and they are the Surf, Share, Play and Play Max – all of which have a range of different functions for them to be used as easy as possible.

The Surf router is a basic 802.11n 2.4GHz wireless router with 256-bit WPA/WPA encryption, as the name proposes, this one is designed for basic web surfing. While the Share, which comes with a USB port so you can easily add an external hard drive and share you movies and photos with all the computers in your house.
